Beyond coaching competencies: From ‘good enough’ to coaching excellence

It is widely accepted by most coaches that competencies matter. Similarly, much of the coaching literature focuses on coaching behaviours, skills, and markers of good practice.


Yet beneath these observable actions sits something quieter and deeper: the who behind the coaching competencies. It is this that takes a coach beyond competence and into the realm of excellence in practice.


This article reflects on a very recent paper that shifts attention away from what coaches do and towards their virtues, exploring the character traits that could move coaches from being “good enough” towards true coaching excellence.
