One of the challenges many coaches struggle with is if or when to interrupt their clients. We debate about whether an interruption is warranted and then, at times, are unsure how to execute it.
ICF PCC Marker 6.6 indicates that any interruption should have a stated coaching purpose:
“Coach allows the client to complete speaking without interrupting unless there is a stated coaching purpose to do so.”

Thus, if the coaching purpose is underpinned by the ethical practice of inquiry and exploration and is governed by the coaching agreement, your decision to interrupt, or not, should be guided by the same competencies.
That said, the skill with which you interrupt is in turn influenced by other coaching competencies, including your coaching mindset, trust and safety, the evoking of awareness and, most especially, your coaching presence.
In short, knowing when and how to interrupt a coaching client is a complex matter and carrying if off skilfully is no easy feat. And so, thanks to our collaboration with our MCC group mentor, Joanna Davis, ReciproCoach will be hosting a group mentoring session, directly focused on mastering The Art of Effective Interruption.
This 90-minute group mentoring session, together with Joanna, myself and up to ten mentees, will include observation and feedback of a relevant recorded coaching session (or part thereof), and discussion around the ICF core competencies in relation to the skill of interruption. Time permitting, it will also include opportunities for live practice. Most importantly, participants will have the opportunity to submit recordings of their most verbose clients (!), so as to get direct feedback on the art of effective interruption within the context of a real coaching session.
This session is limited to 10 participants, is suitable for coaches of any experience level, and counts for 1.5 MCC (or lower credential) group mentoring hours OR participants may claim 1.5 ICF CCEs in Core Competencies towards an ICF credential renewal (more info here). If you miss out on the live session, you can register for observer only recording access here.
